How do I remove VAT from a gross amount?

Accepted Answer

Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate), i.e. by 1.22 at 22%. The result is the net amount; the difference to the gross amount is the VAT. Example: €244.00 ÷ 1.22 = €200.00 net and €44.00 VAT.

Why can’t I just subtract 22% from the gross amount?

Because VAT is calculated on the net amount, not on the gross amount. €122.00 minus 22% gives €95.16 – the correct net amount is €100.00. To remove VAT, always divide by 1.22.

What does “scorporo” mean?

Scorporo dell’IVA is the Italian term for extracting the VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount. In the calculator this is the “Remove VAT” function.

Which VAT rate applies to my goods or services?

Accepted Answer

In Italy the standard rate of 22% applies in general. The reduced rates (10%, 5%, 4%) are mainly listed in Table A of DPR 633/1972. The examples in the calculator are for guidance only – if in doubt, ask your tax advisor.

Do I charge VAT as a forfettario?

Accepted Answer

No. Under the forfettario regime no VAT is charged; the invoice refers to the exemption instead (art. 1, commi 54–89, L. 190/2014). For invoices above €77.47 a €2 stamp duty (marca da bollo) is generally due unless an exemption applies.

Does the calculator also work for Germany and Austria?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Choose the country at the top: Germany with 19% and 7%, Austria with 20%, 13%, 10% and 4.9%. For other countries, e.g. Switzerland (8.1%), enter the rate under “Custom”.
